Palo Alto ADU Laws for a Space Conversion

According to Palo Alto ADU laws, there are two ways to convert a space to build an ADU. These are:

  • You can convert an existing space, such as a garage, into an ADU. This means the ADU is built entirely from the garage.
  • You can convert an existing space and add additional space to build a new ADU. In this case, the conversion is known as hybrid conversion.

If you decide to build a hybrid ADU, then the standard ADU regulations (such as setbacks) for new units are applied.

Also, an additional area of up to 150 square feet can be added to an existing structure for ingress and egress and not transform the project into a “hybrid conversion.

What Is the Allowed Number of ADU in Palo Alto Property

For a single-family residence, you can build 1 ADU or 1 junior ADU if:

  • The ADU is a conversion of space within your single-family home or accessory structure
  • The ADU is an attached unit built within the space of your proposed Single family home
  • The ADU is new and detached

For multi-family homes, you can convert up to 25% of the existing units of non-habitable space within your existing multi-family building. You also add up to 2 detached ADU.
